Okay, so how should an umpire call interference at second base when the defense is attempting a double play? If this isn't the most mis-understood rule in softball, I don't know what is.

I've played baseball all my life and I would not know if the same rule applies here. I think you are talking about runner interference with one of the fielders. If the runner slides, he has to be within arm or leg lenght to the bag. In other words, he has to phisicly be able to attempt to reach second base on the slide.

If he is to far off second base, or attempts to 'spike' the fielder, both runners should be called of on the cound of the force at second, and the interference on the pitch to first. The runner is, however, able to try and 'block' the pitch to first with his hands by lifting them with the slide. The runner at first is then obviously safe and the force still applies at second.

If the runner does not slide, he has to at least get out of the play fast enough so that the fielders can work with enough space. For example, if a 300+lbs runner is at first and that he does not have time to get half-way to second by the time the force tag is applied, he can't just get into the face of the fielder at second and try to block the throw. Once the runner is out, he is no longer part of the play and is subject to runner interference if he stays in the play and modifies the outcome of the throw to first.

I hope this helps.

actually, the rule defining interference (at second) in softball and baseball is distinctly different. it is much more strict in softball primarily for safety reasons. baseball makes great distinction over the direction and distance a base-runner can slide away from the base, etc. in some leagues, the rule has become much more strict, requiring runners to slide "directly into the base." but that is baseball. in softball, the issue is safety, period. as an umpire, if a runner comes into second "spikes up" he will get tossed from the game. i'll leave it at that for now. i have lots more to say on this subject, but i'll wait for a few more responses.
